Our First Official Dr.’s Appointment
Yesterday was Katie’s first official Dr.’s appointment in regard to the pregnancy. We had gone in for the ultrasound on Monday but this was where we actually met with the Dr., answered all the family history questions, and Katie had some blood drawn. Dr. Presley, our doctor, is great. Katie has seen him before but this was my first time to meet him. The first thing he did when he came into the exam room was take our hands and pray with us. We were referred to him by Kathy Franklin and we couldn’t be happier about having him as our doctor. He made us feel very much at ease. He is an older doctor who has delivered hundreds of babies, and although he was not arrogant, he was very confident about the whole thing and said that God’s plan for continuing humanity is a very effective one and there is little we can do to mess this up. I (Brian) am actually quite confident that I have a great propensity towards messing this child up, but I think the Dr. was referring to the actual pregnancy and birth part so we should be okay for at least 7 and a half more months.
Dr. Presley let Katie know that she is not eating for two. (I said nothing of course because even though I don’t claim to be a genius I have learned a few things after almost three years of marriage.) The baby is, what he affectionately referred to him/her as, a parasite and will get his/her nutrition regardless of what Katie eats. Basically the doctor was telling her just to live her life normally, using a modicum of wisdom, and everything will be fine. It really helped us relax about the whole thing.
We are very pleased with how everything went. Our next appointment is in five weeks, July 10th, at which point we will get to hear the heartbeat. Can’t wait!!
The News Spreads
Getting to share the news of our pregnancy has been a lot of fun. The responses to our first post were varying. Some were touching, others were humorous, and a few were admittedly a little troubling. The responses ranged from, “Oh, we’re so happy you’re going to have a baby.” to, “Did Katie swallow a ring?” to, “Why are you all holding a Russian hat?” My favorite was Katie’s mom’s response which was, “Are you gettin’ a critter?” Apparently an ultrasound also masquerades as a soft, furry animal. Is that an ultrasound she’s holding or an ultrahound?
Touching, humorous, and even troubling, we appreciate everyone’s responses and everyone’s enthusiasm. We know we’re not the first couple in the world to be pregnant but it’s our first and we are very fortunate to have such a cloud of friends and family who love us enough to at least seemingly take an interest in our life and rejoice with us.
Can you see the family resemblance?

Here’s a better picture of the baby. I hope you enjoy because it wasn’t easy getting this picture. It took us a long time to talk the lady at Wal-Mart into taking the picture. Talk about an awkward moment…

On Monday, May 26, 2008, we took a home pregnancy test and found out that we were great with child (before that we were just plain great). Who knew that peeing on a stick could bring such joy? We even took a picture of the stick but we’ll spare everyone that image.
