Workin’ On A Full House

A Blast From the Past

My most recent appointment was last Thursday.  This was a long one.  I did my Glucose Tolerance test.  Basically, I went in and had five minutes to drink a bottle of really thick, sugary juice, did my normal check-up with the doctor, and then sat in the waiting room and waited and waited for the sugar to make its way through me.  I had my choice between orange and fruit punch so I decided to go with fruit punch.  My reasoning—lately orangy stuff (really anything acidic) hasn’t been doing so well with me.  So I figured maybe the fruit punch would be a little less painful.  I was wrong.  But it wasn’t too horrible.  My friend Melanie’s description of this concoction was perfect!  It tasted like one of those little juice drinks you drink when you’re little at like daycare or VBS or something.  They come in little plastic bottles, there are like a hundred in a box, they’ve got the little aluminum top you peel off, and how they fall into the juice category is a mystery.  Do you know what I’m talking about?  It was a trip down memory lane right there in the doctor’s office.  And I assume since I haven’t heard anything yet, everything is great.

The baby is right where she should be in my belly, her heartbeat is good, and she’s still kicking away.  Good job Charis, Karis, Caris, Kharis!  Still no final decision on the spelling of her name but it shouldn’t be too much longer.  Thanks for all the help!

She Has a Name – “How’s That Spelled?”

Well, we have decided on a name for our little girl, but we don’t know yet how we want to spell her first name.  So, we are asking you to help us.  Her name is going to be (I’m putting the first name in parentheses because it’s just the phonetic spelling): (Khar’-es) Grace.

(Khar’-es) is a Greek word meaning “grace”, so her name would technically be, Grace Grace, or, Grace upon Grace.  Which, John 1:16 says, ”For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace.”

The proper way to spell her first name is “Charis,” but the “c-h”, which makes a “k” sound in this instance, could be confusing.  Therefore, we are going to take a poll.  Below are some ways we have considered spelling it and we would really appreciate your opinion.  Let us know what you think.  Thanks!

Listen to the proper pronunciation of her name:

  • Charis
  • Karis
  • Caris
  • Kharis

She’s Gonna Be a Soccer Player. She is. She is.

For those of you who aren’t Adam Sandler fans the title is a Billy Madison reference.

I know it has been a while since we last updated our blog.  My apologies.  The old adage that no news is good news holds true.  We have not posted anything because everything is going so well.  Katie is off her anti-nausea medicine (she has been for several weeks) and is feeling great.  The nausea monster has passed as have the intense headaches.  Thank you, Lord.

Another really cool thing is we have been feeling our little girl kick quite a bit.  At first the kicks were so faint that although Katie could feel them I could not.  Now, though, they’re so pronounced you can’t miss them.  An example of this is what happened Saturday evening.  I was in Missouri all last week visiting my folks so when I got back into Nashville on Saturday and saw Katie the first thing I did was kiss her and then put my head on her belly and talk to our little girl.  As I was telling her how much I missed her and her mommy she kicked me right in the face (the baby, not Katie).  Don’t worry I didn’t kick back.  I have to admit, face kicking aside, it was really precious.

You can even see Katie’s belly move now when the baby kicks.  And Katie has become so familiar with her kicking habits that she can pretty accurately guess when the baby will start kicking.  This works out well for me because she can tell me when to be ready to feel them.

As cool as all this is, I still can’t wait for our little girl to be on the outside of Katie’s belly so I can meet her…and tell her it’s not nice to kick daddy in the head.
